MMRA at the Minnesota State Legislature
As a retired public employee, important decisions about your pension are made by the Legislature and the Governor. The laws they pass impact how your benefits are able to keep pace with your living expenses.
MMRA is your voice at the Capitol.
The 2018 Pension Reform Bill addressed that $16.2 billion in unfunded public pension liabilities facing the State of Minnesota. Signed into law by Governor Mark Dayton, the bill passed the Legislature unanimously. Despite proposing twice to permanently cap your COLA at 1%, the Legislature ultimately passed a bill that allows your benefits to modestly increase with inflation.
MMRA led the fight to protect your retirement security. Our team worked hard to show elected officials how a 1% cap significantly erodes your benefits over time, and urged them to fix the unfunded public pension liability without hurting retirees.
And we won!
