MMRA at PERA
The Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA) administers five retirement plans—the General Plan, the Police & Fire Plan, the Correctional Plan, the Statewide Volunteer Firefighter Retirement Plan, and a Defined Contribution Plan.
This means that PERA’s board and staff make recommendations about retirement benefits on behalf of all public employees and retirees.
As a retiree, MMRA is your voice with PERA.
In 2016, PERA staff proposed permanently keeping your COLA at or below 1%, meaning that your benefits would never keep pace with increases to your living expenses and health care costs. MMRA’s team testified in front of the PERA Board and persuaded them to work with retirees on a more fair COLA structure.
Over the next two years, MMRA successfully negotiated with PERA Trustees and staff on a COLA with a floor of 1% and a ceiling of 1.5%, slowing down the erosion of your benefits.
What’s next? The new COLA was passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Dayton, but we’re not done fighting for your retirement security.
